On Friday, the Congress of South African Trade Unions issued yet another anti-Israel statement — this time focussing on the need for a “military embargo” on the Jewish state. The statement accuses Israel of both war crimes and crimes against humanity, and compares it to the apartheid regime in South Africa. It says nothing about an arms embargo on states bordering Israel — such as Syria, which is still in a state of war with Israel. Indeed, one would think that at a time like this, with the Assad regime slaughtering its own citizens in their thousands, that COSATU would be issuing a call for an arms embargo targetting Syria — for humanitarian reasons if no others — but there is not a word about Syria in the statement.
