The pro-Hamas Palestine Solidarity Campaign was supposed to be holding its Trade Union Conference this weekend, as we reported last week. But now they’ve decided to postpone it until next year. Here’s the explanation from their website:
Important announcement: postponement of PSC Trade Union Conference
Unfortunately the PSC Trade Union Conference 29th October 2011 has been postponed until the New Year.
Obviously, the campaign over pensions and building for 30 November is a critical issue for the trade union movement. After consultation with the PSC’s Trade Union Advisory Committee, comprised of representatives from our national trade union affiliates, we have decided to reschedule the PSC trade union conference as we do not want to clash with mobilisation that is taking place up and down the country to achieve the strongest possible turnout on 30 November. A new date will be announced very shortly.
This is odd. Are trade unionists postponing all events a full month before the November 30th mobilisation? The TUC national website lists
four events taking place over the next month. UNISON, a big supporter of the PSC, hasn’t cancelled two its national conferences taking place in November (for disabled members and LGBT members).
As we noted last week, the PSC seems to have attracted only one general secretary (Bob Crow) to speak at this conference - and his union (the RMT) spoke out against the PSC-backed boycott of the Histadrut.
Rumours have it that the real reason the PSC is delaying its trade union conference is due to lack of interest. That would be good news indeed.
